Yakushima, Kagoshima

Yakushima Family Itinerary: Three Days of Kayaking, Hiking and Coastal Time

Choose river kayaking or a roughly ten-hour Jomon Sugi trek, then let a private chef take care of dinner. Plan three days in Yakushima and choose between Nagata, Onoaida and Kurio. KODOU stays are preparing to open.

What would you like to do between the hikes?

A family trip to Yakushima does not need to revolve around a long hike. Give a morning to a guided paddle, an afternoon to the coast and an evening to island food. Share something new with the children, then leave time for the adults to rest too. As we prepare our stays in Nagata, Onoaida and Kurio, we are thinking about the time families spend together after an outing as much as the outing itself.

Mark your arrival airport or port, your main outing and your departure point on a map. Yakushima Airport, Miyanoura Port and Anbo Port are separate gateways. If a hike is the main purpose of the trip, start with its meeting point and pickup arrangements. This guide then compares Nagata, Onoaida and Kurio for time spent beyond the trail.

Nagata: give the beach its own place in the itinerary

Nagata Inakahama is known for its sandy shore and sea-turtle nesting. Consider Nagata when you want a beach visit to be part of a slower day, rather than a brief stop between attractions. For a winter trip, plan around the coastal scenery rather than turtle watching.

Turtle watching is seasonal and subject to conservation rules. Check observation-event arrangements rather than planning an independent night-time beach visit. If you also have a hike or a distant outing, check the meeting point and return journey before booking. Keep a beach-focused day separate from a day with a lot of travelling.

Onoaida: leave time for a local bath

In Onoaida, we suggest leaving time for the local communal bath, Onoaida Onsen. Finish your outing, stop for a bath and return to your accommodation for an easy evening, without rushing to another destination.

Bring your towel, soap and shampoo and take a break in a bath shared with the local community. A simple stop like this can give the family something to talk about over dinner.

Kurio: choose a coastal day, then plan the journeys around it

Kurio has a sandy beach and is worth considering when you want to set aside time for the coast itself. Rather than planning a distant outing every day, leave a day for the area where you are staying. Any swimming plans need to depend on conditions and local guidance; have something else in mind if the sea is unsuitable.

If you want to visit both Kurio and Nagata, plan the journey first: scheduled buses do not run through the western forest-road section between them. For a trip by bus, we suggest enjoying the area around your base rather than trying to make a complete circuit of the island.

A morning on the river and an evening of island flavours

A private chef will also be available for your stay at KODOU in Yakushima. After an outing, leave dinner to the chef and enjoy time together at your accommodation. Our stays are preparing to open; when planning your visit, please ask about chef dates, group size and meal preferences too.

For a shared outing, consider a guided half-day river kayak trip. Yakushima Kayak Trip Shores runs river tours mainly on the Anbo River, with the Kurio River also a possibility. Looking at the forest from the water gives the day a different perspective from a drive or a walk.

Tell the guide where you will stay, your group size and the children's ages before agreeing the location and participation arrangements. From Nagata in particular, consider the return journey too; a beach-focused day may suit your family better. If river or weather conditions prevent the tour, leave the water activity for another time and enjoy a meal out instead.

For dinner, choose a restaurant serving island fish, flying fish or Kagoshima pork. Rather than making every meal elaborate, pick one the family can look forward to. Choose around your base and dishes the children will enjoy, then reserve a table so the evening is not spent cooking or searching for somewhere to eat.

Kayaking or Jomon Sugi: choose the focus for day two

For a shared outing with a free afternoon, build the day around a half-day river kayak trip. Tell the guide the children’s ages and any concerns about being on the water, then choose a suitable tour together. After paddling, leave room for lunch and an afternoon at your accommodation rather than adding a distant attraction.

For Jomon Sugi, reserve a separate full day: the return route is about 22 km and typically involves nine to ten hours of walking, before transfers. Choose it when everyone joining wants that day and has discussed fitness and experience with the guide. It is not an addition to the half-day kayak plan. If some family members stay behind, arrange their transport and meals, with an adult responsible for any children.

Our suggested three days at an island pace

Our KODOU stays in Yakushima are preparing to open. For a future three-day trip at one base, choose between Plan A, a half-day river kayak outing with time to rest, and Plan B, a full day trekking to Jomon Sugi. The driving itinerary below follows Plan A; the hiking alternative follows it. These are separate choices for day two, not activities to combine on the same day.

  1. Day 1 · Arrival afternoon

Arrive and ease into the trip over your first meal

Collect your car and have lunch if it fits your arrival time. Choose a stop on the way to your base, pick up breakfast supplies and leave distant sights for another day. Make the meal part of the journey rather than another drive to fit in.

  2. Day 1 · Late afternoon

    Check in and slow down

Put down your bags and take a break at your accommodation. If everyone has energy, enjoy a short neighbourhood walk before dark; otherwise, leave the rest of the afternoon free.

  3. Day 1 · Evening

    Keep the first evening easy

Choose the nearby restaurant or takeaway meal you planned for arrival day. Keep dinner easy and talk about tomorrow's river or beach outing. Check the meeting instructions for any booked activity, then leave the rest of the evening free.

  4. Day 2 · Morning

Choose a guided paddle or a morning by the coast

After breakfast, head to your booked half-day river kayak tour, with the river and meeting point agreed in advance. From Nagata, choose time at Inakahama instead if that suits your family. Make one shared experience the focus, without adding another distant destination.

  5. Day 2 · Lunch and afternoon

Have lunch, then leave the afternoon open

Have lunch after the outing, then leave time to rest at your accommodation. If everyone still wants to explore, keep it to something nearby. From an Onoaida base, a visit to the local bath is another option if it suits the family. Leave time to settle before dinner.

  6. Day 2 · Evening

Let a private chef take care of dinner at your stay

On an evening with a private chef booked, enjoy dinner at your accommodation without another outing. Leave the cooking to the chef and give everyone time to talk about the day. If you would like local ingredients, discuss your menu preferences in advance. If you choose a restaurant evening instead, arrange the return journey beforehand.

  7. Day 3 · Morning and departure

Have breakfast and head for your airport or port

Have breakfast, check out and leave enough time to return the car and reach your departure airport or port. Keep the final morning simple rather than adding a distant outing.

Day 2, Plan B: a roughly ten-hour trek to Jomon Sugi

For a day devoted to the forest, take the return route from Arakawa trailhead to Jomon Sugi: about 22 km and nine to ten hours on foot, plus transfers from your accommodation. This is a demanding full-day hike. Discuss everyone's fitness, hiking experience and children's ages with a guide before booking. For families who prefer a half-day outing, choose the river-kayak plan above.

Prepare breakfast, a packed lunch, drinks and hiking equipment the evening before, then get an early night. Arrange suitable boots and rainwear, and check seasonal trailhead access and current trail conditions with your guide. Change the plan if weather or trail conditions make the hike unsuitable.

  1. Day 2 · Early morning

Leave for the meeting point agreed with your guide

Agree your meeting point, departure time and transfers in advance. Journeys differ from Nagata, Onoaida and Kurio, so confirm pickup arrangements rather than assuming collection from the house. Have breakfast and head for the trailhead.

  2. Day 2 · Morning to afternoon

Make the walk to Jomon Sugi the focus of the day

Walk at a pace agreed with your guide, pausing for breaks and your packed lunch. Keep energy for the return along the same route. Leave the day entirely for the forest, without adding other sightseeing stops.

  3. Day 2 · After the hike

Return to your accommodation and rest

Head back to your accommodation after the descent. Leave shopping and extra outings for another day, with time to change and rest. Allow flexibility in the return time rather than planning a tightly timed evening.

  4. Day 2 · Evening

After the trail, enjoy an optional private-chef dinner

With a private chef booked, there is no need to start cooking or search for a restaurant after the hike. Discuss dinner timing around your expected return, then share the day's memories over the meal. Keep the following morning easy, as in the three-day plan above.

Arrange transport and meals, then slow down on the island

With a rental car, arrange collection and return around the actual airport or ports you will use. Families need to think about child seats and luggage space as well as seats. If travelling by bus, plan from the return timetable too, rather than choosing destinations first and hoping the connections work.

Yakushima has no 24-hour convenience stores, so pick up breakfast and drinks early. When booking dinner out, arrange the return trip too rather than relying on finding a taxi at night. If driving, choose a driver who will not drink so everyone knows how the evening will work.
